Who have you followed? Not some national or famous figure. Who personally has attracted you in some way that you abandoned your will and attached your energies and efforts to his or her cause?
We’re not talking some cult-like obsession, but rather someone who carries a mantle of truth, sincerity and service.
What goes for us as individuals is similar to what happens to a nation. In the days of crisis immediately following the death of Hebrew King Solomon, most of the nation decided they couldn’t follow his son-successor because he took the advice of his young advisors and peers over the wisdom of King Solomon’s elders: “So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day.” (1 Kings 12:19 NIV)
The angst of this rebellion was a king who wanted to be served and not to serve.
Throughout time, there has been only one man who has passed this most rigorous se
rvanthood test: Jesus Christ.
If we are following anyone else with this kind of undivided loyalty, we are most likely yielding to a stunted leader.
PORTAL TO HEAVEN: Christ’s sacrifice(s) proved he put us over himself because he was following his Father.
Nor yet as lording it over those allotted to your charge, but proving to be examples to the flock…just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many…Simon Peter answered him, ‘Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.’ 1 Peter 5:3 NASB, Matthew 20:28 NASB, John 6:68 NIV
