The Great Re-Router

GUEST PORTAL-ER JENNIFER LEBO

“Student of Grief” Jennifer Lebo was married for twenty-seven years to her beloved Dave who passed at the age of only fifty-four. Years earlier, she lost her father as a younger man as well. Willing to sit still as a student in the Classroom of Grief has made her a skilled teacher in that same field. She resides in Bensalem, Pa.

College orientation required reading a book entitled "How to Study." The book neglected to inform me that the university would eliminate the five-year major I was pursuing. Restless and confused, I offered God a “plan” rather than accumulate tuition debt without a goal.

I told God I was willing for Him to change my plan. I also told Him that I was willing to suffer to learn to minister to others suffering. My plan included going single to a particular mission field. God saw ahead of me. I believe He placed those prayers in my heart to prepare me for the twists and turns ahead in ways no academic study could do.

An example of how God seems to steer our lives occurred at college. I was walking to a carnival put together by fellow students. Suddenly, inexplicably, I just didn't feel like going, and I returned to my dorm instead. A cherry picker, a hydraulic crane with a railed platform used to raise and lower people, was used as a ride at the carnival. Something went wrong and two girls were in peril. One of the maintenance men sacrificed his life to rescue them. He was crushed by the platform. Though I was not an eye witness, visions of the accident have haunted my mind. How much more traumatizing for those who did see and for the family! Without my realizing He was doing so, God mercifully re-routed me that day. Often, it is when I am lost that I learn how roads connect and how God wants to connect with me.

Portal to Heaven: If you ask God for wisdom, don't second guess. Life may seem like it's re-routing when actually God is actively walking alongside of us to get us to where He wants us. If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

James 1:5-8 ESV
