Battles & Blessings

It’s war on the way to hope. Every day can “house” some serious skirmishes to prevent you from getting there. It becomes a matter of dogged determination…

I’m a serious sunriser. It was the major factor in buying my home which faces the east.

During a nine-month rehab of this historic Hudson River home, I would go there almost every day to answer contractors' questions. With each visit, I would get overwhelmed by the cost overruns, debris and dust and the seemingly snail’s-pace progression.

There were many days that it occurred to me to go there early and catch the sunrise as a down payment on hope. I think I did it once.

The rest of the emotional time was spent plunging into the despair of two-by-fours and my check book.

After moving in July, there were spectacular sunrises such as I had never seen before. Each morning was different. It was like going into a gallery of an overactive genius who paints fresh masterpieces overnight and hangs them first thing in the dawn where I can’t miss ‘em.

I could have been enjoying those sunrises during the battle. But I chose to gaze upon the inches of dust and the dwindling bank account.

My bad.

PORTAL TO HEAVEN: Battles and blessings intertwine. It's a wise person who unwinds the portals to heaven during either.

Now the Israelites were in distress that day, because Saul had bound the people under an oath, saying, "Cursed be anyone who eats food before evening comes, before I have avenged myself on my enemies!" So none of the troops tasted food...But Jonathan had not heard that his father had bound the people with the oath, so he reached out the end of the staff that was in his hand and dipped it into the honeycomb. He raised his hand to his mouth, and his eyes brightened. 1 Samuel 14:24, 27
