The Unfolding of Beauty

The unfolding of anything can be at once titillating and sad.

Spring, for example, is one of the most anticipatory times of the year for me. And yet, “Spring has sprung” goes rather quickly like a headline which was so new so fast and so old so quickly. “Don’t droop,” I tell the daffodils as if speaking to a kindergarten class about their posture.

But God, and the former owner of our home, had the kindness to deliberately segue one flower or tree burst into another without allowing for “dead air” as disc jockeys term it or as a delay as a fireworks observer would call five seconds without stimulation.

Yes, yes! The crocus goes and the forsythia turns on its yellow lights. The daffodils compliment and the tulips stand tall. But before you can cry on Mother Nature’s shoulders about them leaving so soon, the wisteria and lilacs and lilies of the valleys exude scents that will forever tease even the most skilled perfumer.

As this trio performs their swan song, poppies pop and peonies prematurely bow. Before long, the rhododendron rehearse as if to rival the others while Indigo Buntings steal some of the attention away from the smart alecky and showy hummingbirds.

I won’t go on, but Mother Nature does!

The unfolding of beauty is a portal not to be missed because there will be plenty of droopy moments for us pilgrims as we lose hair but gain grandchildren.

PORTAL TO HEAVEN: Clutching on to anything can make us lose our grip on the unfolding of life. It’s a dress rehearsal for the final curtain.

We remember the fish we ate in Egypt at no cost--also the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic....But Lot's wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt...But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead,I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.
