Oscars & Fame & Prom Picks

PHOTO: Oscar Winner Eva Saint Marie pictured with her late husband Jeffrey Hayden. The duo had fame of a different sort: 65 years of marriage and no divorce. At 93, she was picked to present an Oscar at the 2018 Academy Awards.

Editor's Note: She graduated from Bethlehem High School in Delmar, NY and I lived around the corner where she once resided.

Oscars and fame make a good couple, but they may loosely be likened to a king and queen of the prom who are selected by popularity as well as some distinguished qualities.

Although an oversimplification, Oscars are actually a bit democratic in that votes are cast by peers.

If it would be more like an English class where the professor is a learned man and selects the best essay, that would one thing. We should not expect his determination to exhibit any resemblance to what’s-hot-and-what’s-not, a politically-correct selection or a categorical wooing-over of corporate popular and personal whims.

A peer-elected award may land us with judges who are talented, but not necessarily the best judges. Without an objective standard of well-formulated constructs, it is more than possible that the best student in the class is going to suffer at the hands of the most popular in the class. The question becomes: What did it take for that student to make himself the most popular?

Hollywood fame is not necessarily synonymous with art. There’s no doubt there’s a lot of talent at that level.

However, talent alone doesn’t always win the day in something as “objective” as sports. What emerges in winner’s circles and locker rooms is that of this great drama: the better team wins. No one ever won the World Series or Super Bowl because they were the most popular team among their peers.

For better or worse, Hollywood gets a leading role in selecting fame-magnets.

On the other hand, The Bible has its way of selecting its own Hall of Fame (or “Hall of Faith” as it is called). It was not peer-picked. There is just one judge and He is known as “The Audience of One.”

PORTAL TO HEAVEN: Spiritually-speaking, those who bring fame to God open portals to heaven by directing attention and adoration to the creator of the drama of life. For the properly-motivated believer, all the world’s a stage.

They shall pour forth the fame of your abundant goodness and shall sing aloud of your righteousness...And though I have no wish to glorify myself, God is going to glorify me. He is the true judge…How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God?…Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions—is not from the Father but is from the world…they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things…For they loved the glory that comes from man more than the glory that comes from God…Like a gold ring in a pig's snout is a beautiful woman without discretion.
