The runner’s legs were his pride. They seemed to cooperate with any challenge since his youth. Where others would slow down or cramp up on the beaches or in the hills, this athlete enjoyed the most gifted of limbs.
Many race and marathon victories were his to claim.
So this setback on the mountain was a literally and figuratively unfamiliar ground. The path was bumpier and the rocks were every runner’s nightmare. The last thing he needed now was a sprained ankle.
Totally out of character, he did the unthinkable. He stopped. He knelt down and began feeling the stones on the path. As he bent over, some sweat ran down his goggles clearing a thin line of vision. He took them off and sprayed them with his water bottle and put them back on.
Realizing that it was not fog that had been the problem, he began looking around. The last rock that he had felt was gone. It had fallen off the cliff. He gulped, now realizing that if he hadn’t stopped, his life’s race would have ended abruptly several hundred feet down.
“Hey!” someone called.
Shocked to hear another voice, he quickly turned around and saw a blinking red light approaching.
“Man,” the stranger said, “you kept up such a pace I couldn’t catch you on time. You picked a path that’s dangerous even for mountain goats. Any further and you would have been toast. Please, follow me back down and let’s get you back with the pack. With those legs, you’ll never be out of the race.”
The runner’s goggles clouded up a bit, but it wasn’t because of his sweat.
PORTAL TO HEAVEN: Ophthalmology has many specialists within its discipline. Some do what others cannot or dare not. Spiritual vision also has many aspects and was designed by God. Without His Word, His followers and His leading, it’s easy to get perilously blind and lost no matter our giftings…just ask Samson.
Look after each other…Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path…Obey your spiritual leaders, and do what they say. Their work is to watch over your souls, and they are accountable to God…[The Holy Spirit] will guide you into all the truth…Or who makes seeing… Have not I, the Lord?
