The Pondering God

Pondering is not a word I assign to God. Think “The Thinker.” No, I just don’t picture The Lord sitting around wondering about anything.

That job has been given to me. I am the ponderer, limited to whatever intelligence and creativity and experiences within me. I remember interviewing the late-great writer Andy Rooney. He told me that each one of us is only given “so much baggage.” Even Einstein was limited to Einstein.

Yet, mothers and fathers know what it is to ponder. Scripture says that Mary pondered. But what did she ponder? Her child. That’s what moms and dads do. We think about our children…all of the time. Of course, they don’t understand that nor are they aware that it’s happening. They erroneously conclude we’re looking over their shoulders or “telling them what to do.” Then, parenthood happens to them and they suddenly see with new eyes and do some pondering themselves.

If, being a dad, I am made in God’s image, I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that God is always thinking about us. Even the most faith-filled mathematician would have a hard time conceiving just how many thoughts that would be. Yet, it’s true. And still, with all my fumblings and stumblings, He is somehow not a worry-wart. Parents could learn a lesson here.

I would like to join the psalmist and say, “I have set The Lord always before me.” But there are too many skips in my record during any given day for that to be honest.

God wildly loves us and He does ponder…thinking up great things for us and about us. It’s us who can’t keep up with Him.

PORTAL TO HEAVEN: It’s impossible to ponder all of the thoughts of God and yet He has assigned us that very job for this express end: it causes us to fall on our faces in utter worship. What might that say to us with regard to our thoughts toward others?

How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand..’For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,’ says the Lord. ‘For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts...For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son...
