A long period of road construction on the way to my spiritual father’s workplace began to wear on his patience. While sitting in traffic, he cried out to God, “Why does this have to take so long?”

Typical of God’s long-suffering with His children, The Lord kindly replied, “This is a main highway and will have to carry heavy traffic. That’s why the construction crew has to go so deep to create a firm base.”

In that moment, the portal from heaven was that Royal was meant to carry a heavy ministry and he eventually did.

Jesus’ life between 12 and 30 years of age have been called the silent years when in fact they speak loudly to how God prepares every person for every good work.

To simply look at Jesus’ forty days in the desert is skimming the surface. If Jesus was baffling the teachers in the temple at twelve, can you imagine what an additional 18 years accomplished? And this the Son of God.

Sometimes I have wondered why my station in life was this or that or why my sanctification seemed on the slow track or why my ministry was going nowhere. But it was during the times when I accepted my place and pace that I was most comfortable with myself and God. He was doing two things at once: allowing me to serve WHILE preparing me for a heavier work.

While side roads are not necessarily relegated to bunny trails, I have progressively understood why highways take more time than byways.

PORTAL TO HEAVEN: The multitude of soul-preparation stages is analogous to how God is using our earthly walk to prepare us for His incredible heavenly roads - all paved with gold.

…we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them…it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.

Ephesians 2:10 (NKJV), Philippians 2:13 (NIV)
