Sexting is probably the most ironic activity of a generation that may not understand the full impact that technology is having on relationships.
For youth, many are blind to what they are missing because they have never known anything different than Play Station, Minecraft and texting. This is not to say that they don’t have close relationships. They just don’t know what former generations have enjoyed. It’s also possible that they don’t know fully know what God intended for relationships.
While it may be argued that they’re into communicating versus live-talking-and-listening, that thesis gets watered down a bit when you see a group of younger people sitting around not engaged with each other.
They may have wider circles of friends and greater interests and learning possibilities than we could have imagined as kids, but there’s a danger of missing the building into the inner circles of life that ground us.
All of this is not to be dumped on young people. It has snuck into virtually every age group including aging boomers and seniors who are getting hooked on every form of device.
We have gotten so far removed from relationships that older folks cheered when they saw the television commercial where the grandparents instituted metal detectors at their front door in order to confiscate the phones of their grandkids and adult children - despite the latter’s best efforts to hide them in socks or wherever.
I know a thirty year-old is actively searching for a pre-school for her child where cell phones and tablets are expressly prohibited and foreign language study is instead substituted.
How could something so small and so close insidiously make us believe we are closer yet?
PORTAL TO HEAVEN: Technology can be great. Like everything else, Satan can use it to counterfeit God’s ways. Do we need to enroll in that pre-school and start all over?

COMMENTS:
During basic training we got up at 0400 -- in the field we shaved out of our "steel pot" helmets. And when snow was on the ground, ouch! Yet that was a time when I truly lived because as soldiers we were close to the elements and each other. On Sundays we got to "sleep in" to 0500.
