The Backside of the Baby

(THIS WEEK: The Backside of the Baby)

We rejoice in our talents. We love to use them. But as we progress, there is usually another side to them.

My old boss called that other end the “backside of the baby.” The context of her insight had to do with the launch of our first newspaper for the non-profit that was my home.

I had drilled down into my courage and put together a budget proposal for a new computer by a young company named Apple

that allowed for the revolutionary concept of “desktop publishing.” My boss approved and I was off and running.

However, the tiny screen of the MacIntosh computer made the layout of a 11”x 17” tabloid so time-consuming that I ended up writing and editing into the deep night. One evening turned into the early morning hours and we had to call the police to let me out of the building because the security alarm could not be undone.

It was after the first issue went to press that the executive director called me in to congratulate me on the launch. Then, within seconds, she asked, “So, what are you doing for the second issue?”

I was so exhilarated and exhausted from getting up to speed on the Pagemaker software and putting the paper together that I hadn’t any idea how quickly the next deadline would approach. Ouch!

That’s when I heard the “backside of the baby” comment that burst my bubble about the idealistic nature of journalism and self-publishing.

Somehow, I recovered and put the next issue to bed - but not before I woke up to the idea that talents, though given for free, cost us everything.

PORTAL TO HEAVEN: God will bring balance into our gifts through friends, co-workers, spouses and relatives who remind us that life is about passion - but not at the expense of the "Giver of the Gifts" nor are they there to inadvertently hurt those God put closest to us.

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights…whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God…My son, never lose sight of God’s wisdom and knowledge: make decisions out of true wisdom, guard your good sense

James 1:17 (NIV), 1 Corinthians 10:31, Proverbs 3:21 (The Voice)
